History of NATE
NATE is the largest non-profit HVACR certification group. NATE started in 1997. Their headquarters are in Arlington, VA. The HVAC industry governs, owns, operates and supports NATE. NATE is the best HVAC resource in the US and North America. NATE tests real-world scenarios and skills. To be NATE-certified, you must take exams on many subjects. These include multiple-choice and knowledge-based tests that use a technicians’ knowledge. Once you pass these tests, you become NATE certified. It shows that you have the knowledge to succeed as an HVACR technician.
NATE came from too many unhappy customers. There were too many callbacks to HVAC technicians who serve and install equipment. They found that the technicians didn’t know enough to give the best service. This caused more callbacks and added unnecessary costs. It led to returns of non-defective equipment and repeated calls for routine services. NATE represents many communities. These includes those in contracting, distribution, manufacturing, utility, and trade associations.
Once 2001 ended, over 10,000 technicians supported NATE. The organization includes the following groups.

- Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES)
- North American Heating, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning
- Wholesalers Association (NHRAW)
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
States like New Hampshire and Texas include NATE in their licensing process. Even the U.S. Army promotes soldiers who earn their NATE certifications. Today, there are 32,000 NATE-certified HVACR technicians in North America. The NATE logo means they strive for quality service and installation.
